About Institute

A.A. Trofimuk Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS is scientific-research institution. The Institute performs fundamental and applied investigations in the field of oil and gas geology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, geophysics, geophysical investigations in oil-and-gas boreholes, and geochemical and geophysical engineering.

The Institute is a structural link in of Sciences of Siberian Branch RAS, it is affiliated to Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, is directly subordinated to Presidium of SB RAS and implements its activity under the leadership of Earth Science Branch RAS and United Scientific Council for Earth Sciences SB RAS. The Institute was founded on initiative of academicians N.L. Dobretsov and A.E. Kontorovich on March 13, 2006 by the merging of Institute of Petroleum Geology, Institute of Geophysics, and technical design for Geophysics and Ecology affiliate to SB RAS.

The Institute includes department of oil-and-gas geology, stratigraphy and sedimentology, geophysics, geophysical and geochemical instrument engineering. Institute consists of 24 laboratory as well as West-Siberian and affiliates; the total number of employees at the institute is more than 500 including 250 scientific workers. From these are: more than 40 DSc and 70 PhD. From this time, the chronicle of and Geophysics SB RAS is kept.

The Institute performs fundamental and applied investigations directed to solution of  foreground problems in basic scientific trends: sedimentary basins, mechanisms of formation and structure; theory of naphthidogenesis; internal Earth's structure, Earth's geophysical fields, contemporaneous geodynamic processes; seismology; global and regional stratigraphy; biogeochronology, typification of ecosystem reconstructions in Proterozoic-Phanerozoic  history of sedimentary basins; Hydrocarbon and coal fields, regularities of their distribution; strategic problems of development of fuel and energy complex; geophysical and geochemical methods of survey and exploration for oil and gas fields: theory, technologies, information-measuring systems, and equipment.

The main production of the Institute is monographs, papers in foreign and native journals, patents for inventions and licenses, and new technological developments.
